With 85th-Ranked Power Comes 85th-Ranked Responsibility

This might not be the sort of thing that gets mentioned in recruiting literature, but if there's any truth to the notion that there's no such thing as bad publicity, then the University of Mississippi School of Law got a bit of good news on Tuesday by being named the No. 85 "Super Lawyer" school in America.

According to the authors of the list, "Our approach is simple. We take a snapshot of the top lawyers in the country and ask, 'What schools produced these lawyers?' Then we report the results. Our rankings fill an informational gap. It throws a new and unique indicator of quality into the mix. It’s another data point for students to consider before making a big, expensive and life-changing decision."

That, of course, is no less subjective -- and, given the single criterion, probably is more arbitrary -- than U.S. News and World Report's annual survey of the nation's law schools, but a pleasant surprise is a pleasant surprise.

Ole Miss' 84th-runner-up finish placed it ahead of several notable schools, including Florida State (No. 87) and Nebraska (No. 113).
